Matthew narrates that Jesus was led into the wilderness, fasted forty days and nights, and was tempted before beginning His public ministry. The temptations target appetite, spectacle, and worldly rule. The foundation here is not the number forty; it is what Jesus is recorded as saying in response.

The issue is not that a person has a self. The danger is pride, vanity, self-exaltation, divided loyalty, and power used for personal glory.
