Understand following Jesus as voluntary surrender of self-rule—not the destruction of healthy identity.

Level 2
Jesus has spoken plainly to His disciples about rejection, suffering, death, and resurrection. Peter resists what Jesus says. Jesus then describes following Him in terms of denying self-rule, taking up the cross, and following.

Church history, later teachers, psychology, and ministry frameworks may illuminate a practice, but none is presented as though Jesus spoke it or as a second foundation.

Denying self does not mean pretending you have no identity, needs, limits, or agency. It means the self is no longer the highest authority.
Jesus joins surrender with invitation: come after Me, learn from Me, receive rest. Discipleship is demanding, but it is not domination by a religious institution.
Following becomes visible in actual choices. A label cannot carry a cross, repair a relationship, tell the truth, or accept responsibility.
